European Union Law

Community law and European Union law

As from 1 December 2009, the date on which the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, the European Union has legal personality and has acquired the competences previously conferred on the European Community. Community law has therefore become European Union law.

The European Union and Bulgaria

After more than seven years of preparation Bulgaria became a full-fledged EU Member State on 1 January 2007.

Joining the EU was a considerable step forward in the process of integration of Bulgaria into the European Union based on the European values and the common aim of creating a common space of freedom, security and justice.

The body of European Union law (EU acquis) created over the years by the institutions of the European Union (complementing each other in an unique manner in their legislative functions) became part of the Bulgarian domestic law.
